Do you ever wonder how the homes featured in magazines always look so perfect? While architecture plays an obviously important role, when it comes to a home’s personality it’s really the finishing touches of a home that become the icing on the cake. All those accessories, cushions, artwork, area rugs, books and trinkets really make a space.

But how do you go about selecting these items and displaying them?

One easy way to get started is to put together a list of places, people, era’s and colours that inspire you. From that list you should have a clear vision of what to shop for. I find one of the best ways to shop for those finishing touches is online.  I visit sites and gather images of accessories I’m drawn to. I then group them together on a Pinterest board.  This way I can see what works for my space and also share my design plans with a trusted (and stylish) friend.

When you are shopping for these décor items, always remember to include a “wink”. Something whimsical and fun, a wink serves as a conversation starter for guests and tends to make most people smile. For 2014-2015 I would suggest shopping for winks in metallic or gold. It’s right on trend and gives a space instant wow.
